“Neighbors working together for community security” is the foundation Dundee Mutual has built its business on for more than 135 years.
The Dundee Mutual Insurance Company was formed on March 14, 1889 in Dundee Township of Walsh County as the “Dundee Walsh County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company.” The first group of 30 charter members were community-minded farmers who recognized the need for cost-effective, adequate insurance for rural farm property. Shortly after forming the company, the first policy was issued on June 10, 1889 — and the first claim was paid in 1890, for the loss of a calf struck by lightning.
In 1957, coverage was extended to include windstorm and hail damage, and in 1966 it grew again to include vandalism, theft, water damage, freezing of plumbing and heating systems, livestock, collapse, glass breakage, and collision or overturn of farm implements. The home office moved between Hoople and Park River over the years before settling in Park River in 1959, where it remains today.
In 1984, policyholders voted to reorganize under the North Dakota Century Code, changing from a county mutual to an incorporated mutual insurance company and expanding to 15 counties. State law changed again in 2005, and Dundee Mutual grew to the 35-county territory it serves today.
Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company honored Dundee Mutual with its President’s Club Award in 2010 and 2012 as one of the top 10 mutual insurance companies in the nine states it serves, and in 2014 listed Dundee Mutual among the top 5 mutual companies it partners with. In the company’s history, 83 different directors have served on the board, and just 9 people have held the office of Secretary/Treasurer.
